<p>In 1977 het prof. dr. S.B. Spies in sy <em>Methods of Barbarism? Roberts and Kitchener and Civilians in The Boer Republics January 1900-May 1902 </em>(Cape Town - Pretoria) verwys na die oortreding<em> </em>van oorlogsgebruike deur 'n viertal offisiere van<em> </em>'n ongereelde Britse eenheid, die <em>Bushveldt Carbineers </em>(BVC) teenoor Boere wat oorgegee het<em> </em>en die sendeling Daniël Heese, van Makapaanspoort.<em> </em>Dit was die enigste voorval van sy soort in die Britse geledere.<em></em></p> <p>As gevolg van hulle oortredings het It. Henry Harbord Morant, It. P.J. Handcock en G.R. Witton (Australiers) en die Brit It. H. Picton in Januarie en Februarie 1902 voor die krygshof verskyn. Die drie eersgenoemdes is skuldig bevind aan moord. Morant en Handcock is op 27.2.1902 op Pretoria tereggestel, Witton is lewenslange tronkstraf opgehê, terwyl Picton skuldig bevind is aan strafbare manslag en afgedank is (p.276).</p> |
