The discovery, on the NE of the Iberian Peninsula, of several Late Iron Age Iberian stelae, sharing very similar decorations among each other, claims for a more detailed study. This paper clearly wants to undertake so. As to the motifs, groups of vertical lances sculped on the stone at one or several horizontal levels have been traced, perhaps linked with another group of stelae generally located in Lower Aragón (North Central Spain). Traditionally, such stelae have been related to the funerary warrior cult. However, according to their location, chronology and associated settlements, I think they might function as landmarks for the Iberian auxiliary troops moving to Southern Gaul between the end of Second and the early First centuries BC.<br><br>El hallazgo de varias estelas ibéricas en el nordeste peninsular con unos motivos decorativos muy similares entre ellas, sugiere un estudio de conjunto. Dicha decoración se caracteriza especialmente por la presencia de lanzas verticales dispuestas paralelamente en una o varias franjas horizontales, y poseen evidentes signos de relación con el grupo de estelas del Bajo Aragón. Tradicionalmente se ha asociado estos monumentos con el mundo funerario de carácter guerrero. Sin embargo, en base a su disposición, cronología y yacimientos asociados, se propone una vinculación con el movimiento de tropas auxiliares hispanas hacia el sur de la Galia entre finales del s. II e inicios del s. I a.n.e. |
