The present study investigated the relation between representations historically constructed about the role of female teachers, with teachers speeches nowadays, examinating its consequences in the construction of teacher identity. This research was conducted in a mining representations present in the minutes and journals of the first Normal School of Caxias do Sul/RS, which was inaugurated in 1930. Then such statements were related to narratives of teachers today, discussing continuities and changes. The results showed a strong link between the historical and contemporary speeches, referring to education as a vocation related to motherhood. The communication was concluded with a discussion concerning the possible consequences of these representations in the pedagogical practice.
