dc.description	A formação ética dos futuros cidadãos foi o primeiro e também o mais constante sentido atribuído à ação educativa - ao menos desde que esta deixou de ser uma prática privada, exercida de forma espontânea e dispersa no cotidiano social, dando origem a instituições sociais específicas e a fazeres especializados. Ao ser inaugurado, o longo debate sobre os fins e sobre os procedimentos da educação era essencialmente movido por interrogações em que ética e política encontravam-se fortemente entrelaçadas. Tornada atividade social explícita e refletida, a educação se fez instrumento de construção de uma nova polis - de realização da obra política, pela formação ética dos futuros cidadãos. Mais ainda, a tarefa de formação ética para a cidadania deve ser associada à própria invenção da noção de escola, quer a entendamos em sua acepção mais ampla - como instituição consagrada a um tipo de educação que transborda o âmbito estritamente doméstico e que é confiada a "especialistas" -, quer a concebamos na acepção muito especial que passou a possuir na modernidade - quando à escola pública é imputada a responsabilidade quase que integral por uma formação antes confiada ao conjunto dos cidadãos.<br>The ethical education of future citizens was the first and steadiest meaning ascribed to the educational action - at least since this ceased to be a private practice exercised in a spontaneous and dispersed fashion to make way for specific social institutions and specialized actions. Since its beginning, the extended debate about the ends and procedures of education was essentially motivated by questions in which ethics and politics were strongly intertwined. Grown into an explicit and reflexive social activity, education became an instrument to construct a new polis - accomplishing the political undertaking through the ethical education of future citizens. Moreover, this task must be associated with the invention of the notion of school, understood in its broader sense - either as an institution devoted to a kind of education consigned to specialists and that goes beyond the strictly domestic sphere, or in the special sense it acquired in modernity when the public school system is assigned almost full responsibility for education, which used to be consigned to the citizens as a whole.
