dc.description	A sociologia da infância propõe-se a constituir a infância como objecto sociológico, resgatando-a das perspectivas biologistas, que a reduzem a um estado intermédio de maturação e desenvolvimento humano, e psicologizantes, que tendem a interpretar as crianças como indivíduos que se desenvolvem independentemente da construção social das suas condições de existência e das representações e imagens historicamente construídas sobre e para eles. Porém, mais do que isso, a sociologia da infância propõe-se a interrogar a sociedade a partir de um ponto de vista que toma as crianças como objecto de investigação sociológica por direito próprio, fazendo acrescer o conhecimento, não apenas sobre infância, mas sobre o conjunto da sociedade globalmente considerada. A infância é concebida como uma categoria social do tipo geracional por meio da qual se revelam as possibilidades e os constrangimentos da estrutura social. O desafio a que nos propomos é interrogar o modo como constructos teóricos como "geração" e "alteridade" se constituem como portas de entrada para o desvelamento dos jardins ocultos em que as crianças foram encerradas pelas teorias tradicionais sobre a infância e de como esse conhecimento se pode instituir em novos modos de construção de uma reflexividade sobre a condição de existência e os trajectos de vida na actual situação da modernidade.<br>The sociology of childhood intends to establish childhood as a sociological object, rescuing it from the biological viewpoint, which reduces it to an intermediate maturation and human development stage, and from the psychological approach, which tends to look at children as individuals who develop independently from the social framework of their conditions of existence and from the different representations and pictures that have historically been built about and for them. Moreover, the sociology of childhood proposes to question society from a point of view that considers children as a per se object of sociological investigation, increasing knowledge on both childhood and society as a whole. Childhood is thus conceived as a generational category that reveals the possibilities and constraints of the social structure. The challenge we address is to question how such theoretical constructs as "generation" and "alterity" are set up as gateways to the hidden gardens in which children have been confined by the traditional theories on childhood and how such knowledge can create new ways of building up reflexivity on both the conditions of existence and the paths of life in the current situation of modernity.
