dc.description	A educação no ensino superior é um tema que tem obtido grande espaço no meio social e acadêmico, tendo em vista o considerável aumento no número de ingressantes. Um dos fatores relevantes nesse debate é a avaliação da aprendizagem, que está relacionada ao novo contexto em que se insere o ensino superior, seja no Brasil ou no mundo: a emergência da educação a distância (EaD). Esta recente modalidade de ensino tem levantado questionamentos relevantes, visto que os ambientes virtuais de ensino e aprendizagem possuem características e desafios peculiares, próprios das transformações tecnológicas que vêm moldando as relações humanas e sociais ao longo das últimas décadas. Essas considerações configuram o problema de pesquisa deste estudo, que busca analisar as formas tradicionais de avaliação, bem como as tendências atuais, através de uma análise de sua aplicabilidade no panorama contemporâneo do ensino superior. A ideia é mostrar que a avaliação, como instrumento mecânico e formal, não é adequada nem suficiente para as novas demandas em termos de ensino. Com a disseminação do ensino a distância, novas formas de avaliação são necessárias, seja na educação presencial ou a distância, a fim de que o processo avaliativo se constitua em uma verdadeira ferramenta pedagógica, e que permita a demonstração da construção do saber, na forma mais abrangente possível, através da seleção dos instrumentos mais pertinentes a cada tipo de conhecimento a ser avaliado. Learning in higher education has been discussed in social and academic debates due to the considerable increase in the number of admission spots in public universities. One relevant factor in this debate is the learning evaluation, which is related to the new context of higher education both in Brazil and in the world: the rise of distance learning. This new mode of education has been raising relevant questions, since teaching and learning in virtual environments have their own characteristics and challenges, mainly because of technological transformations that are shaping human and social relations over the past decades. These considerations are the research subject of this study, which aims to analyze traditional forms of evaluation, as well as its current trends, through an analysis of its applicability in the contemporary context of distance learning in higher education. The goal is to show that the evaluation is a mechanic and formal instrument, which is neither appropriate nor sufficient for the new demands in terms of learning. With the spread of distance learning, new forms of evaluation are needed, whether in the classroom or distance education, so that the evaluation process constitutes a genuine educational tool and allows the demonstration of the construction of knowledge, in the wider possible way, through the selection of the most relevant instruments to each type of knowledge.
