Situation of the Pre-Service Science and Technology Teachers’ Scientific Literacy

dc.description The present study was carried out to investigate the science and technology literacy of the students (n:186) from the department of Science Teacher Education of the Necatibey Education Faculty at Balıkesir University. The data for the present study were collected through “Science and Technology Literacy Scale” developed by the researcher. The scale consists of three parts: “knowledge and comprehension” (40 items), “ attitudes and significance” (14 items) and “tracking and operating” (22 items). At the end of the study, it was found that the technology-related “knowing and understanding” level of the pre-service teachers and their conception level of the interaction among technology, society and environment is medium except for some misconceptions related to this interaction; yet, their competency to conceive the nature and methodology of the science is highly low. Though the pre-service teachers’ attitudes towards science and technology are positive, it is seen that they have not been able to internalize the nature of the science sufficiently. Finally, the pre-service teachers were found to be following the developments in the field of science and technology, but they think that they can use the science and technology well.
