dc.description	O surgimento do sindicalismo docente de educação básica constitui o objeto de análise deste artigo. São estudados dois casos de formação de sindicatos: São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro. A questão subjacente consiste em entender porque o sindicalismo docente surgiu décadas após o sindicalismo operário no Brasil. Para a construção de organização sindical são necessárias condições objetivas e subjetivas de parte do grupo social em movimento. Nossa hipótese é de que condições relativas à formação da consciência dos trabalhadores assalariados, tanto quanto condições objetivas, são imprescindíveis para qualquer tipo de organização sindical, particularmente para os docentes de educação básica.<br>This article deals with the emergence of elementary school teachers' labor unions. Two case studies are analyzed, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The aim of this paper is to understand why teachers' unions were created decades after the emergence of working class unions. The creation of labor unions by the social group in question requires objective and subjective conditions. Our hypothesis is that, besides the objective conditions, rising worker's awareness is also essential for the emergence of any type of union organization, particularly teachers' labor unions.
