dc.description Ethanol abuse consumption by adolescents is a public health problem. Alcohol induces brain damage, producing neuropsychological disorders and altering higher executive functions. Our aim is to determine the neuropsychological deficits induced by heavy intermittent alcohol drinking in young adults and, to provide evidences about brain damage alcohol-related cues on this pattern of intaking. Neuropsychological assessment was done to participants to examine different cognitive tasks. The subjects were assigned in three categories: 1) Young adults reporting heavy binge ethanol drinking during weekend; 2) Young people with moderate binge ethanol drinking during weekend; and 3) no ethanol consume. The results indicate that intermittent binge alcohol drinking in youth, showed worse performance in most neuropsychological executive function task used in the evaluation processes. These findings support that binge pattern exposure to ethanol induces neurocognitive impairment equivalent, in a lot of features, to those found in chronic alcohol consumption. Moreover, the heavy intermittent alcohol drinking in adolescents and early adulthood increases risk of lifetime alcohol dependence and other psychopathology.
