dc.description Rilke’s poetry and prose has been translated and is translated into different languages of the world. Many translators tried to interpret Rilke’s creative legacy by translating it into Russian, English, French and other languages. To many researchers’ opinion Rilke’s poetry is very much interesting to English-speaking readers. In their articles they note that Rilke is read by Englishmen and Americans more than by Germans. English speaking nation pays more attention to Rilke’s works. New translations of Rilke’s poetry appear constantly; monographs and works analyzing poet’s creative legacy are published in English-speaking countries which is the proof of the fact that Rilke is studied by philologists there more than anywhere else in the world. The chronology of translating R. M. Rilke’s «Duino Elegies» into English is analyzed. The author of the article considers the influence of Rilke’s poetic heritage onto literature of English-speaking world. Purpose: To study the history and chronology of Rilke’s «Duino Elegies» translations into English. Methodology: Method of historic and philological analysis. Results: Studying the chronology of Rilke’s works translation into English it is necessary to admit that there is no definite division of poet’s creative legacy into periods. We single out the following five stages of Rilke’s «Duino Elegies» translations into English: the opening period - 1931 - 1948; the transitional period -1957 - 1965; the «anniversary» period - 1972 - 1981; the new period - 1987 - 1993; the newest period - 1999 - 2012. Practical implications: Special courses and seminars on history and theory of fiction and poetry translation; courses of comparative stylistics of German and English and creative seminars of translators.
