dc.description	Este artigo demonstra as conexões entre imaginar nações e imaginar infâncias e defende um exame mais crítico dos papéis e das significações mutáveis das lembranças de infância em narrativas autobiográficas, assim como do crescente uso, no mundo inteiro, de memórias de infância para a construção do eu moderno. O vínculo entre o eu da criança e o eu do adulto é o corpo enquanto repositório de memórias e sistema de ação, e o exame profundo e contínuo das experiências de infância é geralmente considerado como uma parte central e natural da representação da pessoa adulta. Logo, as reminiscências de infância costumam desempenhar um papel importante nas narrativas de vida em termos de quantidade, intensidade e centralidade, embora, ao mesmo tempo, tenham recebido pouca atenção teórica até agora. A meu ver, esses fatos fornecem a chave para a análise cultural do presente estágio da modernidade. Distingo as infâncias textuais das infâncias vividas e discuto o tipo de informação sobre uma infância vivida que as histórias de vida podem fornecem. Em particular, pergunto se as histórias de vida contadas por adultos podem nos ajudar a entender as experiências da infância do "ponto de vista da criança". A diferença entre o eu que narra e o eu que foi atinge o seu auge quando as pessoas narram suas experiências da infância. É neste sentido que as lembranças da infância podem ser consideradas como "infâncias imaginadas". A discussão junta insights de muitas disciplinas e implicações para as teorias social e literária.<br>This article demonstrates connections between the imagining of nations and the imagining of childhoods and argues for more critical examination of the changing roles and meanings of childhood recollections in autobiographical narratives as well as of the increasing use throughout the world of childhood memories for the construction of the modern self. The link between the child and the adult self is the body as a repository of memories and an action system, and the continuous scrutinizing of childhood experiences is usually regarded as a central and natural part of the representation of the adult person. Childhood reminiscences therefore often loom large in life narratives in terms of amount, intensity, and centrality, at the same time as they have so far obtained little theoretical attention. These facts, in my view, provide a key to the cultural analysis of the present stage of modernity. I distinguish between textual childhoods and lived childhoods, and I discuss what kind of information about lived childhood life stories can provide. In particular, I ask if life stories told by adults can help us understand childhood experiences from "the child's point of view". The difference between the self who tells and the self who was is at its greatest when people narrate their childhood experiences. It is in this sense that childhood recollections can be regarded as 'imagined childhoods'. The discussion brings together insights from many disciplines with implications for both social and literary theory.
