dc.description This paper compares the Honours degree classification results that arise from the use of an average percentage with the use of a so called spectral technique. The analysis is based on results for 220 students on BEng and MEng degree programmes across a range of engineering disciplines. The application of spectral techniques is considered both with and without aggregation of marks before entering the results into the spectral calculation. It is shown that the various methods give some variation in classification results, especially so at the lower end (3rd class and no awards).
