dc.description How is Ontology relevant to Distance Education? This article claims that ontology and ontological engineering have a potential to increase intelligence both in the learning environments for distance education, and in the process of designing them. An introduction to the origins of the concept of ontology in western philosophy is presented, as well as a discussion on the relationships between artificial intelligence and ontological engineering, followed by a description of methodologies and tools for ontological engineering.
