Palabras clave: docente virtual, tutor virtual, competencia tutorial.<br>he purpose of this study consisted in conceptualizing the virtual teacher competence, base on a literature review on the topic. Since there, an instrument was designed and psychometrically validated to identify the competence profile of the virtual teacher. A sample of n = 110 higher education teachers, with eLearning experience and accessible to the researcher were utilized. The instrument was constructed as an estimations scale format, based on frequencies of five positions (always, almost always, sometimes, almost never and never); its first versions was of 90 items, while the last was of 44, after the technical study of the instrument was realized. The Factor Analysis was used as the mainly statistically technique for data analysis. The results indicated that: (a) the content and construct validity were satisfactories for the instrument purpose; and (b) the internal consistency reliability averaged r = 0,96, estimates by Cronbach Alpha and Hoyt methods. It is concluded that the virtual teacher competence scale measures what it is expected to measure and it does it in a stable and consistent way. Key words: eLearning teacher, online tutor, tutorial competence.
