dc.description	This article examines how J. L. Vives reworks the traditional tenets about virginity. Vives begins with the claim of defining marriage as a Christian institution which represents the union of love and the pursuit of harmony. Virginity will be a characteristic of all states because it essentially involves the ability to assess things in a reasonable manner and, from that assessment, to choose the best and truly useful one.<br>En el presente artículo se estudia cómo J. L. Vives reelabora los postulados tradicionales sobre la virginidad. Vives parte de la reivindicación del matrimonio para definirlo como institución cristiana en lo que tiene de unión de amor y de propuesta de vida en concordia. La virginidad será característica de todos los estados porque supone esencialmente capacidad para valorar las cosas en su justa medida y, desde esa valoración, poder escoger lo mejor y verdaderamente útil. Para elaborar este artículo hemos tenido presentes varias ediciones de las obras completas de Vives, especialmente «De institutione feminae Christianae» y su «De officio mariti». De igual modo se ha relacionado la obra de Vives con la de Erasmo. De este autor se han tenido presentes especialmente: «Apología del matrimonio» y «Coloquios familiare»s. Todo ello permite tener una visión bastante próxima sobre cómo entendieron la vida matrimonial dos de los representantes más cualificados del Humanismo europeo.
