dc.description Este artigo procura analisar as principais tendências de investigação das dissertações de mestrado e teses de doutorado defendidas nos programas brasileiros de pós-graduação em educação, no período de 1981 a 1998. Para tanto, selecionamos teses, dissertações e artigos de periódicos que procuraram investigar a escola básica contemporânea por meio de quatro entradas: escola, saberes, professores e alunos. Mediante protocolo com 17 questões, pudemos mapear, organizar e analisar os seus conteúdos, o campo empírico e as características das investigações. Os principais achados dizem respeito à regularidade da distribuição no tempo e entre os quatro campos temáticos, à grande incidência de estudos sobre o ensino fundamental, à alta concentração da produção no eixo Sul-Sudeste e em orientadores experientes e à precariedade dos resumos em termos de informações sobre o campo empírico e as características das investigações utilizadas.<br>In order to review the main trends in brazilian research on basic education we analyse academic production (master's and doctorate thesis) presented at the Education postgrade programs in the period 1981-1988. The studies were selected through four keywords: school, school knowledge, teachers and students. We have developed a specific protocol with 17 questions to collect and organize the data. The relevant findings concern: a) the regularity of the production in the four thematic fields; b) the great incidence of studies about the fundamental school; c) the high concentration of research in the south-southeast regions and the strong preference for experienced tutors; the lack of information about the empirical scope and features of the investigation process.
