dc.description	The best interest of the child is the most important principle in legal matters for children. However, there is no precise definition of the concept. We do not know what the best interest of the child is and neither do we know who is the most competent person to define it. The principle has several meanings, as a political aim as well as an ethical and legal principle. The legal principle can be interpreted extensive and offensive out of its purpose or as a rule, precisely and exclusively defined. These two ways of interpreting the best interest of the child, was the subject for a legal conference in Tromsö, Norway in January 2001. This article presents a reflection of the discussions.
