dc.description For Dewey a democratic society is characterized by the well-balancedparticipation of its members in all its goods and important matters.Mathematics education can help to develop an appropriate way ofthinking according to such a view of democratic life from two differ-ent aspects: the culture of instruction and the general goals of math-ematics education. However, the “swotting up” of computation andtraining of algorithms contradicts such a culture of instruction; thepupils should instead get the opportunity to develop their own ideasand to work together on problems. The teachers have to mediate thesense of learning mathematics. The general goals of mathematicseducation can be seen in four different dimensions: enlightenment(understanding the world, becoming orientated in the world), prag-matism (usefulness for everyday life, preparation for future life),personality (individual abilities, personal identity), sociality (living ina community, cooperation and communication, responsibility).Comments and examples of mathematics education in respect tothese dimensions are given in the article.
