Abstract:Based on a reading of the short story Juan Sin Miedo («fearless John») by three adolescents, I intend to provide an answer to the question of the main fears that the Costa Rican adolescent population faces at present. The answers given by these adolescents focus on three significant central elements: fear of economic and social exclusion, expressed through discriminatory treatment towards those who do not subject themselves to the criteria imposed by the consumer society; fear of school in that it excludes those who do not meet the expected academic performance standard; and fear of others, particularly out in the street and in school as realms of violence. I conclude by pointing out that it is possible to visualise, behind such fears, a desire to belong; a longing for both, a sincere and free appreciation where the individual‟s academic performance is not what counts, and for safety within the immediate surroundings.
