dc.description In the last two decades, both the Theory of Speech Acts and its application have been extensive. The theory has been exploited particularly in the field of Applied Linguistics. The purpose of the writer is to indicate the value of the concept, to explain why it needs close analysis, to outline the theoretical constructions formulated to enable Applied Linguists to exploit the concept, and to describe some of the problems which arise from the application of the theory.
