dc.description The aim of the article is the verification of the alternative syllabus of biology for 1st and 2st years of study on high schools, which is based on the ecological principle. This means, that the topics presented do not copy biological disciplines, but rather explain the core of biological processes and relationship between organisms through the relations in natural habitats. The aim of this pedagogical experiment was to find out how can the students, working according to this syllabus, cope with such a complex study topics as the metabolism of plants and animals and related problems. The topic was presented on a model example of the thematical unit „The vital functions of plants" and „The reception and processing of substances and energy".Príspevok je zameraný na overovanie alternatívneho obsahu biológie pre 1. a 2. ročník gymnázia, ktorý je koncipovaný na ekologickom princípe. To znamená, že učivo nekopíruje jednotlivé biologické disciplíny, ale podstatu biologických dejov a vzťahy medzi organizmami vysvetľuje cez zákonitosti fungovania prírodných spoločenstiev. Cieľom pedagogického experimentu bolo zistiť, ako pri takto koncipovanom učive zvládnu žiaci aj náročné učivo metabolizmu rastlín a živočíchov a dejov, ktoré s týmto procesom súvisia, na modelovom príklade tematického celku „Životné funkcie rastlín" a „Príjem a spracovanie látok a energie".
