dc.description The aim of this study is to assess the speeds silent reading and level of reading comprehension of the 8th grade students according to different variables. The study group is formed by thinking the primary schools which have different social economic backgrounds.In this frame ,in this research this study group includes 185 8 grade students attending three different public schools in towns of İzmir. In this study, speeds silent reading and the level of reading comprehension of the students are determined by using three different texts.The factors of reliability of the texts that are dealed with,are between 70 and 75. Also, some variables such as gender, the schools which students attend and educational backgrounds of students’ mothers and fathers are determined through the data gathering form. In the study, it is indicated that there is not a significant difference among speeds silent reading of the 8th grade students in terms of gender, socioeconomic status of schools and academic background of students’ mothers and fathers; whereas it is observed that there is a significant difference in the students’ level of understanding according to their schools that are attending.
