Using a conversation-analytic approach, the present study investi-gates how Swedish secondary-school students draw on democraticdiscourse during their work in small groups. The analyses demon-strate the importance of democratic issues to students, not only inrelation to their teachers, but also in relation to their peers. Theanalyses also point to how students repeatedly employ democraticdiscourse for a number of strategic purposes, e.g. in order to takecontrol of the work, to defend their own or others’ democraticrights, or, quite paradoxically, to construct the democratic order asundemocratic. Moreover, the analyses show that democratic arrange-ments in school not always are productive for the work at hand.Instead of focusing on the task, students frequently engage in nego-tiating various democratic issues. The results are discussed in rela-tion to previous research and alternative methods of investigation. In sum, the study implies that democracy must be studied as aninteractive process rather than as something that exists in a fixedstate. This entails a focus on how students do democracy ratherthan how they appear as democratic beings. |
