Writing a historical essay in argumentative genre is an important activity in learning and understanding the history. Argumentation is the symbol of good writing. In historical argumentation, what is expected from students is not to put the events into a chronologicalorder but to put a claim and then give a detailed discussion of the their claim based on evidence. In the present study, based on Toulmin’s argumentation model, general argumentation and historical argumentation are dealt with and features and importance of writing historical argumentation in history courses are emphasized. Moreover, sample activities that can be used to encourage students to write historical argumentation texts and evaluation criteria for a historical text in argumentative genre are presented.
