El presente ensayo aborda el actual papel del docente universitario latinoamericano, cuyo quehacer se contextualiza en las contradicciones planteadas por maneras diferentes de entender la finalidad de la educación ya que, mientras la perspectiva del mundo neoliberal y globalizado promueve la formación de un nuevo trabajador, las perspectivas crítica y de la complejidad proponen la formación del nuevo ciudadano del mundo. La primera prioriza la formación de individuos mentalizados en la inmediatez, proclives a un consumo exacerbado, subsumidos en una sociedad desestructurada donde las nuevas tecnologías de la comunicación y la información parecen tener un fin en sí mismas, relegando su inicial papel de medios; mientras que la segunda promueve una educación comprometida con el desarrollo del ser humano como sujeto inteligente, personal y social, a quien le es imposible seguir pensando de manera lineal, ya que la ciencia multiplica su manera de captar, entender y explicar la realidad, lo que demanda la conformación de un pensamiento diferente. Ante esta realidad se plantea la interrogante de cómo llevar a cabo la labor académica, la respuesta se encuentra en la redimensión del perfil del docente: caracterizado por una postura crítica, promotor del ejercicio selectivo de la información, así como del pensar desde la complejidad, atendiendo el bien común. Lo que conlleva la integración de comunidades abiertas al diálogo, donde el profesor media y facilita la estructuración de mentes creativas y propositivas que aceptan el cambio y la multiplicidad de factores, para así construir saberes propios que coadyuven en la convivencia inmediata y mediata con los demás y con el hábitat.This essay presents the current role higher education teachers in Latin America play, within a context of contradictions related to the different perspectives and understandings on the main objectives of Education. On one hand, there are the neoliberal and globalized perspectives where education should be aimed toward the training of the new worker; and on the other hand, the perspectives from the Critical Theory and the Theory of Complexity where education should be aimed toward the development of the new citizen of the world. The first perspective promotes individuals focused on exacerbated consumption, instant satisfaction, subsumed in a chaotic society where communication technologies and information accessibility seem to be ends in themselves instead of means. The second perspective promotes an education engaged with the development of the human being as an intelligent, personal and social individual, one who cannot think lineally, as science multiplies his/her way of being aware, understand and explain reality, appealing to the construction of a different frame of mind. In this context, a question arises: How to teach? The answer to this lies in the heightened importance given to the teaching role, characterized by a critical position, promoting the selective use of information and complex thought, paying special attention to the common good. This will produce dialogic communities and their integration, where the teacher mediates and facilitates the construction of creative and purposeful minds that embrace change and the multiplicity of factors; and through which to build self-knowledge to promote their mediate and immediate coexistence: with others and within their own habitat.
