The number of global challenges, that accentuate the strategic importance of education are formed at a time, when developed economies move from industrial phase in the post-industrial phase. We are witness witnessing the rapid technological change, digitization of economic activities and the introduction of modern technologies in various areas of society. In connection with these trends of development it is necessary to build a lifelong learning system. Lifelong learning as a relatively wide range of various components and subsystems of education is also linked to various forms of creating resources for them. The paper deals with the theoretical definition of the concept of lifelong learning. A core part is devoted to an analysis of sources of funding of school education and further education and training in Slovakia. The end of article outlines the trends in the development of lifelong learning funding in the future.
