Objetivo: abordar aspectos históricos sobre el internado de pregrado en Medicina y contextualizar el abordaje de las competencias clínicas en México en el área latinoamericana. Desarrollo: se hizo una revisión en la que todas las facultades y escuelas de Medicina latinoamericanas que se incluyeron contemplan al internado de pregrado en la formación médica, aunque existen sustanciales diferencias en cuanto a las temáticas incluidas, tiempos de duración, lugar de emplazamiento, papel de la formación del estudiante en la investigación y papel de la práctica comunitaria, entre otros aspectos. Conclusiones: el internado de pregrado resulta una práctica indispensable para que los alumnos apliquen, integren y consoliden los conocimientos adquiridos durante los ciclos previos, a través de su evolución histórica, ha permitido el despliegue de las competencias básicas para ejercer la práctica clínica y en los últimos años se ha prestado atención al reconocimiento de los problemas en el medio en que se desenvuelve el hombre<br>Objective: to deal with the historical aspects on the undergraduate internship in Medicine and to contextualize the approach of the clinical competences in Mexico in the Latin American area. Development: it was made a review in which all the Latin American schools and faculties that were included contemplated the undergraduate internship within medical training, although there are substantial differences as to the themes included, duration, location, role of the student&#8217;s training in research and the role of community practice, among other aspects. Conclusions: the undergraduate internship is an indispensable practice for students to apply, integrate and consolidate the knowledge acquired during the previous cycles. Through its historical evolution it has allowed the unfolding of the basic sciences to exert the clinical practice.
