Resumen:El esparcimiento y la recreación frecuentemente se definen de manera individual y, por lo tanto, no se entienden o interpretan universalmente. Los diferentes contextos culturales pueden originar distintas definiciones o significados de esparcimiento. El reto de las personas que estudian el esparcimiento es interpretarlo de tal forma que ayude a las personas a entender acerca de su valor en la calidad de vida. Por consiguiente, este estudio examinó el significado de esparcimiento para estudiantes de un curso de estudios generales de la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) y de Montclair State University (MSU), una universidad estatal del noreste de Estados Unidos, en el I ciclo lectivo del 2009. Las personas participantes fueron 388 estudiantes (149 hombres y 240 mujeres, promedio edad = 21 años, DE = 3.3) del curso de Actividad Deportiva, de carreras de grado de ambas universidades. El estudiantado contestó el Inventario de Significados de Esparcimiento (Schulz y Watkins, 2007). Este cuestionario incluye cuatro categorías: pasar el tiempo, escapar de presiones, tomar decisiones y lograr autorrealización. En términos generales, las diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los grupos universitarios se relacionaron con el concepto de esparcimiento como “pasar el tiempo” y “tomar decisiones”. Las percepciones de esparcimiento como “escapar de presiones” y “lograr autorrealización” sólo fueron el resultado de diferencias estadísticas significativas de casos específicos. Los resultados indican que los estudiantes de MSU tienden más a percibir esparcimiento como “pasar el tiempo” y “tomar decisiones” que la contraparte costarricense.Abstract:Leisure and recreation are frequently defined personally and individually, and therefore not understood or interpreted universally. Different cultural contexts may result in diverse definitions and meanings of leisure. The challenge for leisure researchers is to interpret leisure in a way that will help an individual understand about the value of leisure in quality of life. Therefore, this study examined the meaning of leisure for students in one class of the general education program from the University of Costa Rica (UCR) and Montclair State University (MSU), a state university in the Northeastern United States, at 2009 Spring Semester. The participants were 388 students (149 males, 240 females; mean age = 21, SD = 3.3) enrolled in undergraduate general physical education courses at both universities. They responded to the Leisure Meaning Inventory (Schulz and Watkins, 2007). The questionnaire included 4 categories: passing time, escaping pressure, exercising choice, and achieving fulfillment. In general, the most significant differences were related to the perception they had about leisure as passing time and as exercising choice. On the other hand, leisure perceptions defined as escaping pressure and achieving fulfillment were found statistically significant different in specific cases. The results revealed that MSU students were more likely to perceive leisure as exercising choice and passing time that their UCR counterparts.
