The purpose of this study is to determine whether second grade students use newly learnt words in written expression during Turkish course or not. In 2008-2009 academic years, 163 second grade students in Eskisehir were presented text-based activities. Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis. The results of the study showed that students‟ usage levels the keywords and newly learnt words were quite low. It was also determined that students use the words repetitive and nonrepetitive. Besides, girls were more successful at using newly learnt words in their written expressions and it was also understood that students mostly use the words in informative and poetic texts in their written expressions.
