The article deals with social and cultural determinants influencing on the qualitative change of requirements to a teacher’s person, media competence as an integral trait of the new teacher for the new school. The basic stages of media education development in the pedagogic department of Irkutsk State Linguistic University in the socially-humanitarian context to realize presidential initiatives «Our new school» are shown. They reflect a subjective aspect of understanding «media competence» in the wide social and cultural meaning.
