OBJETIVO: mostrar algunos elementos teóricos y metodológicos que sustentaron el proceso de perfeccionamiento, en su concepción macro mediante un algoritmo que se resume en 3 momentos: diagnóstico inicial, definición del modelo de especialista y estructura general de los contenidos necesarios. DESARROLLO: el diseño de un plan de estudios o diseño curricular está en función de las necesidades sociales, económicas y culturales de un país. La situación de salud de Cuba y el mundo, los avances científico-técnicos en el campo de la Higiene y Epidemiología y otras ciencias afines, exige cada vez más la formación de un especialista con conocimientos y destrezas esenciales para desempeñarse como buen salubrista. Este elemento, unido a la necesidad estratégica del sistema nacional de salud de reducir a 2 años el tiempo de formación de especialistas, fueron premisas para llevar a cabo en el 2006 un proceso de perfeccionamiento del plan de estudios de la especialidad, en virtud de saber si el currículo vigente desde 1995 respondía a las actuales exigencias del encargo social y qué cambios eran necesarios introducir en la organización de sus diferentes componentes para mantener su condición de pertinente. CONCLUSIONES: se realizan consideraciones finales en relación al cumplimiento del diseño, al encargo social y a la concepción sistémica de los componentes del plan de estudios.<br>AIM: to show some theoretical and methodological aspects supporting the improvement process in its macro-conception by means of an algorithm summarized in three stages: early diagnosis, definition of the specialist model, and general structure of the necessary contents. DEVELOPMENT: the design of a curriculum or the curricular design depends on the social, economic, and cultural needs of a country. The situation of health in Cuba and in the world, and the scientific-technical advances in the Hygiene and Epidemiology field and in other related sciences, increasingly demand the training of a specialist with essential knowledge and skills to fulfill his duties as a good health worker. This element, together with the strategic need of the health national system to reduce in 2 years the training period of the specialists, were the premises to carry out in 2006 an improvement process of the curriculum of the specialty to know if the present curriculum used since 1995 meets the current requirements of the social task and which changes need to be introduced in the organization of its different components to maintain its condition as pertinent. CONCLUSIONS: final considerations were made in relation to the accomplishment of the design, to the social task, and to the systemic conception of the components of the curriculum.
