It asks whether acquiring language is a straightforward natural process (magie naturelle, ‘natural magic’) or a difficult learning task (processus laborieux, ‘heavy haul’). It concludes that it is both natural magic, and a heavy haul. It is important to be aware of the normal progress at each age in order to be able to help second language learners. Of particular importance is the role of ‘caregivers’, those who look after the young learners.
