Nous proposerons quelques outils pour la mise en place de dispositifs d’enseignement/apprentissage transférables à d’autres contextes, susceptibles de conduire les apprenants à prendre conscience des écarts entre la réalité de l’Autre et l’idée qu’ils s’en font, et à prendre du recul sur leurs propres repères identitaires.<br>Trying to develop learners’ intercultural awareness implies first defining where the bar to be reached is, but also identifying the starting point – exploring where the learners are in terms of existing beliefs and representations concerning self and others. These beliefs and representations need to be questioned for learning to take place, where learners and teachers construct awareness which takes into account a more ethno-decentralised vision of foreigners. However, it is not easy to do this within the short period of time generally available (24 hours) in classes of over 40 students. It calls for the development of tools which can be used to trigger the learning process and build the necessary distanciation that might enable students to understand other cultures. In this paper we present an example of how we have implemented such tools in a university context with business English students and suggest how the experience may be transferable to similar contexts where students may become aware of the discrepancy between the reality of otherness and their vision of what that reality might be. It also aims at encouraging students to reflect on how their own cultural identity has been constructed.
