Description:
Two suburbs. The multidisciplinary research project Suburbia and School focuses the relation between the practices of normalisation in school and the local social context. It consists of a case study of two public comprehensive schools in the districts of Älvdalen and Bergsgärdet in the municipality of Strandholmen. Apart from introducing the articles included in this presentation, the purpose of this text is to briefly analyze the local social context in which the two cases/schools exist. It is based on data from interviews, emails, digital and printed documents, official statistics, and (participant) observations. The analytical frame is inspired by Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of field, capital, and habitus. The main point of the article is that the districts of Älvdalen och Bergsgärdet occupy positions at the bottom of the urban hierarchy of districts in Strandholmen, and that they are characterized by segregation and multidimensional poverty.
