Description:
This study examined the readability level and variation of word and sentence length of tales in different grade levels of primary school Turkish lesson textbooks. A text’s readability level was determined using Ateşman’s formula – based on word and sentence length – which was adapted into Turkish from Flesch’s Reading Ease Formula. The results of the study revealed that the story texts in primary school textbooks do not change per their word and sentence lengths in different grade levels. The only variance observed was in the sentence length and readability level in the sixth grade. It is concluded that, in general, the readability levels of primary school Turkish lesson textbook tales are easy. Sentence length and readability data were analyzed using two independent sample t-tests. The results of these analyses demonstrated that a meaningful difference was observed only beyond the first and second grades.
