L’article a pour but d’examiner le rôle des langues véhiculaires, lingua franca et auxiliaires dans les relations interculturelles et, en particulier, la place de l’anglais lingua franca (ELF). Une première partie est consacrée aux définitions des notions de langue naturelle et artificielle puis de langue véhiculaire, lingua franca et langue auxiliaire, et pose la question de la place de la culture dans ces langues « de liaison ». L’article examine ensuite plus en détail la particularité culturelle de l’anglais et les spécificités de l’ELF. La troisième partie est consacrée à un bref rappel historique, d’une part de la place du latin dans sa dimension de langue auxiliaire européenne et, d’autre part, de la création d’une langue auxiliaire internationale, l’IDO. En conclusion, l’article situe l’ELF dans cette perspective historique, souligne la pérennité des problèmes soulevés par les langues « de liaison » et replace celles-ci dans un cadre interculturel.<br>The article examines the part played by lingua francas and auxiliary languages in intercultural relations and more specifically the role of English as a lingua franca or ELF. In the first part, the definitions of natural and artificial languages, lingua francas and auxiliary languages are discussed and the place of culture in these “common languages” is assessed. The article then examines the cultural specificity of English and the characteristics of ELF. The third part consists in a brief overview of the history of Latin as a European auxiliary language on the one hand and of the creation of the international auxiliary language IDO on the other. The conclusion reassesses ELF in this historical perspective and brings out the continuity of the problems raised by these common languages, which are replaced in an intercultural framework. |
