This study aims at identifying misconceptions of undergraduate students studying at different departments of Education Faculty and Arts & Sciences Faculty of Balıkesir University on the topic “solutions” and figures out the conceptual models of students about dissolution at particle level. For this reason, a questionnaire which consisted of 3 open-ended questions related to the density of solutions, particular structure of solutions and volume change in dissolution was applied to 416 students in 2006 – 2007 academic year after the topic “solutions” was taught. Responses of the students can be grouped under 5 headings which are “right”, “partially misconception”, “misconception”, “not responded”, and “failed to relate”. Each category’s frequency was calculated and identified misconceptions were categorized. Besides; interviews were conducted with 43 students. As a result of the study, students possess a number of misconceptions related to this topic and some recommendations are made to prevent them.
