This paper explores the issue of the accuracy of the phonological patterns in the training of primary teachers of the English language in France, 80 % of whom are specialists in disciplines other than modern foreign languages. The analysis of oral productions of more than one thousand trainee teachers over a decade (1998-2008) has allowed the researchers to define an approach to address the particular issues of teachers providing pronunciation models to early learners. The form of training to be adopted emphasizes accuracy rather than comprehensibility of content. This article gives a detailed account of the training process. Starting from the comparison of the phonological architecture of French and English, it concentrates on the treatment of the suprasegmental and the segmental aspects of the English language. It pragmatically suggests examples of activities and exercises which should allow the trainees to teach the oral language more efficiently.
