Description:
An alternative method to calculate the terminal velocity of a descending sphere on a viscous media is presented in this work. From a digital video filmed of the sphere’s movement inside the fluid, which is processed with DivYX software for obtaining the position and time, it is possible to get the pathline of the sphere inside the media as well as the exact moment in which the terminal velocity is reached. Fluid’s viscosity can be determined with the value of the terminal velocity and making a force balance on the sphere. A didactic alternative is presented with this method in order to help students understand the difference betwen Newtonian and Non-Newtonian fluids.
