This study checks the didactic possibilities for the development of the linguistic competence of the monolingual dictionaries and other dictionaries, glossaries and specialized corpora published in paper and in electronic format. Part of a reflection on teaching models of the lexicon and defends a cognitive model that focuses on the text as a semiotic unit. This model of didactics of the vocabulary agrees with the latest linguistic theories (natural theory, connectionism and cognitive linguistics) that prioritize the semantic value of the sign and the lexical connections in the speech opposite to the formalist approaches of the structuralism and the generativism.The different dictionaries, glossaries and digital corpora analyzed in this work are an example of effective tool for the learning of all the linguistic fundamental aspects to the development of the lexical competence. From them different exercises can be designed to expand the vocabulary.
