After listing the main difficulties French learners have on both segmental and suprasegmental levels, the article presents some methodological tools designed to enable them to improve their command of oral English. First, the article presents drills on sound recognition (both in and out of context) designed to help with differentiating between sounds and producing them correctly. These exercises also allow students to see the relation between written and spoken English. Other methodological tools include exercises on rhythm focusing on word stress (production and perception). They also introduce the idea of vowel reduction which is central to English rhythm in words and in connected speech for both pronunciation and comprehension. The article systematically underlines how these two aspects of oral English interrelate. The teaching environment necessary for this methodology is also discussed.
