This article discusses reasons for the dominance of typological constructions in contemporary research of social inequality. The analysis shows that it is not historically contingent or temporary phase and it is not due to the imperfection of the available methods. On the contrary, thinking about social inequalities in terms of typologies is natural, and the use of stratification models based on typology, provides implementation of a wide range of research functions in the studies of social inequality.
