The purpose of this paper is to examine the implications of large-scale assessment forthe school curriculum, especially in the evaluation of learning. The aim is also to exploreits potential for controlling and shaping school work. The study will be based oneducational policy initiatives carried out in the state of São Paulo, discussing possiblerepercussions. Data from researches conducted in state schools will be presented,particularly those focusing on evaluating learning, such as Arcas’s (2009) and Freire’s(2008).
