O texto tem por objetivo apresentar os primeiros resultados de investigação que se debruça sobre a qualidade do ensino de graduação. As análises são desenvolvidas sobre material resultante de entrevistas presenciais e por e- mail com pró- reitores de graduação de doze diferentes universidades brasileiras. O foco está nas relações entre o conceito de qualidade de ensino de graduação, nos indicadores desta qualidade e nos exemplos de ações que ratificariam essa condição. Princípios de análise de conteúdo de Bardin permitiram- nos obter, através da descrição do conteúdo das mensagens, indicadores que ajudaram a fazer inferências de conhecimentos relativos às condições de produção das mensagens e demonstraram a carência da clareza do que seja qualidade de ensino de graduação desde a perspectiva da instituição, a submissão da mesma a uma lógica de mercado, o vácuo existente entre intenção e gesto e o olhar individualizado e pontual sobre qualidade e não o institucional e sistemático como seria desejável.<br>This text aims to present the first results of an investigation on higher education quality. The analyses were developed on a material gathered from interviews, applied both personally and by e- mail, with provosts from twelve different Brazilian universities. Its focus is on the relations among the concept of higher education quality, the indexes of this quality, and some instances of actions that could ratify this condition. Principles from Bardin's content analysis allowed us to gather, through the description of the contents of the messages, some indexes that helped us to infer knowledges related to the conditions in which the messages were produced and demonstrated a lack of clarity on what higher education quality is from the perspective of the institutions; their submission to a market- oriented thought; the existence of a void between intention and action; and an individualized and pointed view on quality instead of an institutional and systemic one, as would be desirable.
